{Dr Good Investigates... Art and Science}
2019
Performance lecture, Culture Lab, Newcastle University
Part of the CONTINUUM residency and project at Allenheads Contemporary Arts
Curated by Alan Smith, Helen Ratcliffe and Rob La Frenais
What is the relationship between art and science? Are they forever destined to be polar opposites - fact/fiction, rational/irrational, predictive/unpredictable - or is there a point of intersection, and if so, what exactly happens when the two disciplines collide?
Beginning from an art perspective, during the course of the event I put on my Lab Coat of Reason, my hard hat, my safety goggles and pick up my Clipboard of Truth to become Dr Good, to continue my investigations from a logical, philosophical and scientific point of view.
A wide-ranging talk that takes in popular culture, sport and politics alongside Captain Scarlet, extreme ironing and synchronised swimming, Dr Good considers the problems and possibilities for art and science.
Continuum is the latest project from Allenheads Contemporary Arts. It is a successor to last year's BEYOND project for which I devised a star map of the Allenheads area and it will take a look at the links between art, science and literature.
