{A Collection for King's College Chapel (500th Anniversary)}
2015
Cabinets, history books, mixed media
Photography: Josh Murfitt
A Collection for King’s College Chapel (500th Anniversary) provides a meditation on the passage of time and our attempts to make sense of the past.
Two cabinets stand on a plinth, in the form of an altarpiece on top of an altar. The frontmost cabinet appears empty and pristine, but on closer inspection contains dates between 1446 – 1515, cut from history books and suggesting the calm and controlled march of history and the inevitability of progress. The obverse contains the remaining uncontrolled mass of sprawling text, threatening to escape from the cabinet; the chaotic remains of pure, undigested and unprocessed thought.
Around the base four candles maintain a vigil and invite us to pause and reflect on the passage of time and our attempts to weave narratives out of past events.
Exhibited at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge as part of Memories and Dreams, curated by Toby Young
